Before deciding on a career in the electrical trade, you need to know what skills are required to train as an electrician. You need to check whether you have those skills and if a career in electrical is a good fit for you.

1) Basic Maths & Physics

To become an electrician, you don’t need to be a genius at maths or advanced physics. Although, you will need basic algebra and physics that you most likely learned in school. If you hate math, and electrical career is not for you. Math is essential to almost everything an electrician does, whether it’s taking measurements for cabling or calculating power and current rating for cables. If you intend to perform advanced electrical jobs further in your career you will also need knowledge of physics.

2) Problem-solving skills

To become a good electrician, you should have logical thinking and problem-solving abilities. You’ll be diagnosing problems and coming up with the best solutions to fix them all day. Every single day you will face complex tasks. e.g. Why is the circuit breaker tripping so frequently? What is the most cost-effective method for wiring this system? etc.

You can solve any complex problem if you know how to exercise patience, logical thinking, and prioritise safety.

3) Teamwork 

Electricians usually have to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people such as project managers, homeowners, engineers, etc.

The size of the project will determine whether you work alone or with a team. If you are assigned to large commercial building projects, you will need to work with other electricians, tradesmen, contractors, engineers. project managers.
