How to determine the pitch of a bolt or nut

There is a significant difference between metric and imperial fasteners. They're not interchangeable. A similar-sized metric bolt cannot be fitted into an imperial nut without causing irreparable damage to both the nut and the bolt. Metric screws utilize a Thread Pitch, but Imperial screws use 'Threads Per Inch' (TPI).  Metric Thread Pitch is measured by measuring the distance between two thread peaks in millimetres.
