How to determine the pitch of a bolt or nut

There is a significant difference between metric and imperial fasteners. They're not interchangeable. A similar-sized metric bolt cannot be fitted into an imperial nut without causing irreparable damage to both the nut and the bolt. Metric screws utilize a Thread Pitch, but Imperial screws use 'Threads Per Inch' (TPI). 

Metric Thread Pitch is measured by measuring the distance between two thread peaks in millimetres. There are commonly two types of metric threads, as stated in the table: standard/coarse thread and fine thread.
